Chained together, they allow **unauthenticated
remote code execution** on any exposed Plex server running:

```
Plex Media Server < 1.43.3.10861      (including 1.43.3.10828!)
```

Exploitation began in the wild on Oct 17, 2026 — two days after the PoC went public —
dropping an **XMRig Monero miner** and a residential proxy called **myawesomeproxy**.

Patched build: **1.43.3.10861** (current latest: 1.43.4.10903).

## What the script checks

All checks are strictly **read-only** — nothing is modified on your machine.

| # | Check | What it looks for |
|---|-------|-------------------|
| 1 | Plex install(s) | Docker containers and native (package/systemd) installs |
| 2 | Plex version | Anything below 1.43.3.10861 = vulnerable |
| 3 | Processes | `xmrig`, `myawesomeproxy`, `stratum+tcp`, miners, suspicious `/tmp` binaries |
| 4 | Files | Miner/proxy artifacts in `/tmp`, `/var/tmp`; non-standard `.so`/`.sh` files dropped in the Plex **Codecs** folder (the attack writes a malicious library there) |
| 5 | Network | Established connections on known mining ports (3333, 14444, 14433, 45700), processes connecting from `/tmp` |
| 6 | Plex logs | Exploit signatures (`/video/:/transcode/universal` SSRF with an external `url=` parameter, junk `X-Plex-Token`, `myawesomeproxy`) |
| 7 | Persistence | Recently modified `authorized_keys`, cron entries referencing `curl`/`wget`/`/tmp` |

Checks it cannot perform are reported as `[SKIP]` with an explanation — they
require root (run `sudo bash plex-check.sh`) or are unavailable inside a container.

## How to run

Copy the script onto the machine running Plex, then:

```bash
bash plex-check.sh
```

For the deepest checks (native Plex logs, root-owned folders, cron):

```bash
sudo bash plex-check.sh
```

Requirements: `bash`, GNU `find`/`grep`/`sed`. Linux is the target platform;
on other platforms it degrades to fewer (or `[SKIP]`ed) checks.

### Exit codes (useful for automation)

| Code | Meaning |
|------|---------|
| 0 | No compromise indicators found |
| 1 | Action needed: vulnerable version and/or compromise indicators |
| 2 | Plex Media Server not detected on this machine |

## Reading the output

- `[PASS]` — check confirmed clean.
- `[WARN]` — something exists that *could* be an indicator but is often
  legitimate (recently changed `authorized_keys`, cron entries that use
  `curl`, …). Look at them and confirm they are yours.
- `[FAIL]` — either your Plex version is vulnerable, or a known compromise
  indicator was found. Act on it.
- `[SKIP]` — the check could not run in this environment.

## What to do if a check fails

**Vulnerable version but no [FAIL] IOCs:**
1. Upgrade Plex to ≥ 1.43.3.10861 immediately (latest release is best).
2. Disable **Settings → Remote Access** if you don't need it.
3. Change your plex.tv password (Plex suffered a data breach in 2022).

**Any [FAIL] IOC fired (processes, files, network, logs):**
1. **Isolate the machine** from the network first — do not delete evidence yet.
2. Assume the `plex.tv` token and any credentials the Plex user could reach
   are stolen. Rotate them from a clean machine.
3. Reinstall from scratch:
   - Docker: delete the container **and** its data volume/directory, pull a
     fresh image, recreate.
   - Native: back up your media (not the config), wipe the OS or at least the
     plex data dir + user, reinstall current Plex.
4. If the same machine holds other services (SSH keys, VPN configs…), audit
   those too — the exploit runs as the `plex` user, but drop more payload
   once inside.

## False positives to expect

- The Codecs folder legitimately contains standard Plex codec libraries
  named `lib*_decoder.so` / `lib*_encoder.so` — those are filtered out; only
  *unexpected* names are flagged.
- `authorized_keys`/cron WARNs assume attackers like persistence, but you
  probably also touched your own keys recently — that's fine.

## For the paranoid / manual verification

```bash
# exact version
curl -s http://SERVER_IP:32400/identity | grep version=
# what's inside the container
docker top
# exploit signatures in the last 3 days of logs
docker logs  --since 72h 2>&1
  | grep -iE 'transcode/universal\\?[^ ]*url=(https?|ftp|gopher)|myawesomeproxy'
```

#!/usr/bin/env bash
#
# plex-check.sh — read-only compromise check for Plex Media Server
#
# Checks whether a Plex install shows signs of compromise via the
# "Plex2Shell" exploit chain (CVE-2026-96652 / -96654 / -96655 / -96656)
# and the malware dropped in the wild (XMRig miner, "myawesomeproxy").
#
# Vulnerable:     Plex Media Server < 1.43.3.10861 (including 1.43.3.10828)
# Patched in: 1.43.3.10861 (latest at time of writing: 1.43.4.10903)
#
# The script is strictly read-only. Vulnerability
CVE-2026-110936 Siemens Software Center Uncontrolled Search Path Element Vulnerability
These types of vulnerabilities are a frequent attack vector for malicious cyber actors and pose significant risks to the federal enterprise.
Binding Operational Directive (BOD) 26-04: Prioritizing Security Updates Based on Risk establishes vulnerability management requirements for Federal Civilian Executive Branch (FCEB) agencies. BOD 26-04 reinforces the importance of the KEV Catalog and requires federal agencies to prioritize rapid remediation of high-risk vulnerabilities, specifically those identified by Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) listed in CISA’s KEV Catalog on publicly exposed assets that grant total control of the asset post-exploitation, while deferring action for lower-risk vulnerabilities. BOD 26-04 further establishes basic expectations for when agencies must check whether threat actors compromised the system before the patch was applied.
While BOD 26-04 applies only to FCEB agencies, CISA encourages all organizations to adopt risk-based vulnerability management and prioritize remediation of KEV Catalog vulnerabilities. CISA will continue to add vulnerabilities to the catalog that meet the specified criteria.
Aware of an exploited vulnerability not currently listed in the KEV Catalog? Submit it for potential addition through CISA’s KEV Nomination Form. Potential KEV additions must have a CVE ID, evidence of exploitation, and clear mitigation guidance.
https://www.cisa.gov/news-events/alerts/2026/10/20/cisa-adds-six-known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog
https://t.me/VulnerabilityNews/45019
The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) on Tuesday added four vulnerabilities to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, including four vulnerabilities impacting Plex Media Server that's collectively called Plex2Shell.

The vulnerabilities are listed below -

  CVE-2026-96652 (CVSS score: 5.3) - Plex Media Server Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF)
https://thehackernews.com/2026/10/cisa-orders-federal-agencies-to-patch.html
🚨 GitHub 监控消息提醒

🚨 发现关键词： #SSRF #POC #CVE

📦 项目名称： B63-POC-CVE-2026-96652
👤 项目作者： basesixtythree
🛠 开发语言： Unknown
⭐ Star数量： 0  |  🍴 Fork数量： 0
📅 更新时间： 2026-10-22 14:00:21

📝 项目描述：
PoC and verification material for CVE-2026-96652 (Plex Media Server timeline SSRF, owner-token disclosure chain)

🔗 点击访问项目地址
https://t.me/GithubRedTeam/106586
🚨 GitHub 监控消息提醒

🚨 发现关键词： #SSRF #POC #CVE

📦 项目名称： B63-POC-CVE-2026-96652
👤 项目作者： basesixtythree
🛠 开发语言： Unknown
⭐ Star数量： 0  |  🍴 Fork数量： 0
📅 更新时间： 2026-10-22 14:00:21

📝 项目描述：
PoC and verification material for CVE-2026-96652 (Plex Media Server timeline SSRF, owner-token disclosure chain)

🔗 点击访问项目地址
https://t.me/GithubRedTeam/106586
🔴 EXPLOITED

Four Plex Media Server flaws chain into remote code execution with no login, all now flagged by CISA as exploited.

Internet-facing Plex below build 1.43.3.10861 is the target, abused for crypto mining and proxying.

Patch now.
