CVE-2026-81642 — Heap buffer overflow and possible Remote Code Execution when digesting DNSKEY

Affected: NLnet Labs Unbound

In NLnet Labs Unbound up to and including 1.26.0, a vulnerability was found in the DNSSEC validator that enables denial of service and possible remote code execution as a result of digesting DNSKEYs. A DNSKEY with an owner compression pointer to its own RDATA can overflow the digest buffer. Remote code execution is possible through attacker controlled data. An adversary can exploit the vulnerability by controlling a malicious zone and querying a vulnerable Unbound.

USN-8873-1 — unbound vulnerabilities

Affected: Ubuntu:Pro:14.04:LTS: unbound, Ubuntu:Pro:16.04:LTS: unbound, Ubuntu:Pro:18.04:LTS: unbound, Ubuntu:Pro:20.04:LTS: unbound, Ubuntu:22.04:LTS: unbound, Ubuntu:24.04:LTS: unbound, Ubuntu:26.04:LTS: unbound

Yuqi Qiu and Xiang Li discovered that Unbound did not correctly handle
certain memory operations. An attacker could possibly use this issue to
cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary code. (CVE-2026-81642)

Ben Morris discovered that Unbound did not correctly handle certain
memory operations. An attacker could possibly use this issue to cause a
denial of service or execute arbitary code. (CVE-2026-82717)
