Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable

The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ksmbd: fix use-after-free by using call_rcu() for oplock_info

ksmbd currently frees oplock_info immediately using kfree(), even though it is accessed under RCU read-side critical sections in places like opinfo_get() and proc_show_files().

Since there is no RCU grace period delay between nullifying the pointer and freeing the memory, a reader can still access oplock_info structure after it has been freed. This can leads to a use-after-free especially in opinfo_get() where atomic_inc_not_zero() is called on already freed memory.

Fix this by switching to deferred freeing using call_rcu().

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

Bluetooth: L2CAP: Fix use-after-free caused by l2cap_reassemble_sdu

Fix the race condition between the following two flows that run in parallel:

  1. l2cap_reassemble_sdu -> chan->ops->recv (l2cap_sock_recv_cb) -> __sock_queue_rcv_skb.

  2. bt_sock_recvmsg -> skb_recv_datagram, skb_free_datagram.

An SKB can be queued by the first flow and immediately dequeued and freed by the second flow, therefore the callers of l2cap_reassemble_sdu can't use the SKB after that function returns. However, some places continue accessing struct l2cap_ctrl that resides in the SKB's CB for a short time after l2cap_reassemble_sdu returns, leading to a use-after-free condition (the stack trace is below, line numbers for kernel 5.19.8).

Fix it by keeping a local copy of struct l2cap_ctrl.

Acrobat Reader DC versions 2021.005.20060 (and earlier), 2020.004.30006 (and earlier) and 2017.011.30199 (and earlier) are affected by a Use After Free vulnerability that could lead to disclosure of sensitive memory. An attacker could leverage this vulnerability to bypass mitigations such as ASLR. Exploitation of this issue requires user interaction in that a victim must open a malicious file.
