Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-416

Allowed

Use After Free

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable

The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

9821 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-07-30 09:31 – Updated: 2025-11-04 00:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

nilfs2: add missing check for inode numbers on directory entries

Syzbot reported that mounting and unmounting a specific pattern of corrupted nilfs2 filesystem images causes a use-after-free of metadata file inodes, which triggers a kernel bug in lru_add_fn().

As Jan Kara pointed out, this is because the link count of a metadata file gets corrupted to 0, and nilfs_evict_inode(), which is called from iput(), tries to delete that inode (ifile inode in this case).

The inconsistency occurs because directories containing the inode numbers of these metadata files that should not be visible in the namespace are read without checking.

Fix this issue by treating the inode numbers of these internal files as errors in the sanity check helper when reading directory folios/pages.

Also thanks to Hillf Danton and Matthew Wilcox for their initial mm-layer analysis.

Details

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of the rect Field attribute. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code under the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-5434.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

mac802154: Fix potential RCU dereference issue in mac802154_scan_worker

In the mac802154_scan_worker function, the scan_req->type field was accessed after the RCU read-side critical section was unlocked. According to RCU usage rules, this is illegal and can lead to unpredictable behavior, such as accessing memory that has been updated or causing use-after-free issues.

This possible bug was identified using a static analysis tool developed by myself, specifically designed to detect RCU-related issues.

To address this, the scan_req->type value is now stored in a local variable scan_req_type while still within the RCU read-side critical section. The scan_req_type is then used after the RCU lock is released, ensuring that the type value is safely accessed without violating RCU rules.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-10-21 15:32 – Updated: 2025-11-04 00:31

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

vhost_vdpa: assign irq bypass producer token correctly

We used to call irq_bypass_unregister_producer() in vhost_vdpa_setup_vq_irq() which is problematic as we don't know if the token pointer is still valid or not.

Actually, we use the eventfd_ctx as the token so the life cycle of the token should be bound to the VHOST_SET_VRING_CALL instead of vhost_vdpa_setup_vq_irq() which could be called by set_status().

Fixing this by setting up irq bypass producer's token when handling VHOST_SET_VRING_CALL and un-registering the producer before calling vhost_vring_ioctl() to prevent a possible use after free as eventfd could have been released in vhost_vring_ioctl(). And such registering and unregistering will only be done if DRIVER_OK is set.

Details

When the application opens a PDF file, JavaScript uses the damaged field tree to trigger field traversal, resulting in the program holding an invalid form object when accessing the field property path. Eventually, the application crashes due to reading an invalid pointer.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-06-05 12:31 – Updated: 2026-07-13 12:34
VLAI
Details

A use-after-free flaw was found in the X.Org X server and Xwayland in FreeCounter(). A client that sets up multiple SyncCounters and awaits on those triggers can trigger a use-after-free when destroying those counters via a second client connection. This may be used to crash the server, or for privilege escalation if the X server runs as root.

GHSA-7J5C-W63J-H48P

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-04-17 12:32 – Updated: 2026-05-12 12:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net/ipv6: avoid possible UAF in ip6_route_mpath_notify()

syzbot found another use-after-free in ip6_route_mpath_notify() [1]

Commit f7225172f25a ("net/ipv6: prevent use after free in ip6_route_mpath_notify") was not able to fix the root cause.

We need to defer the fib6_info_release() calls after ip6_route_mpath_notify(), in the cleanup phase.
