CWE-416
AllowedUse After Free
Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable
The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.
9821 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-03-27 18:31 – Updated: 2025-04-15 21:31In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
Bluetooth: Fix possible deadlock in rfcomm_sk_state_change
syzbot reports a possible deadlock in rfcomm_sk_state_change [1]. While rfcomm_sock_connect acquires the sk lock and waits for the rfcomm lock, rfcomm_sock_release could have the rfcomm lock and hit a deadlock for acquiring the sk lock. Here's a simplified flow:
rfcomm_sock_connect: lock_sock(sk) rfcomm_dlc_open: rfcomm_lock()
rfcomm_sock_release: rfcomm_sock_shutdown: rfcomm_lock() __rfcomm_dlc_close: rfcomm_k_state_change: lock_sock(sk)
This patch drops the sk lock before calling rfcomm_dlc_open to avoid the possible deadlock and holds sk's reference count to prevent use-after-free after rfcomm_dlc_open completes.

GHSA-7RP6-2M4J-7W56
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-05-17 15:31 – Updated: 2024-12-30 18:30In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
mlxsw: spectrum_acl_tcam: Fix possible use-after-free during activity update
The rule activity update delayed work periodically traverses the list of configured rules and queries their activity from the device.
As part of this task it accesses the entry pointed by 'ventry->entry', but this entry can be changed concurrently by the rehash delayed work, leading to a use-after-free [1].
Fix by closing the race and perform the activity query under the 'vregion->lock' mutex.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-05-03 03:31 – Updated: 2024-05-03 03:31Foxit PDF Reader AcroForm Doc Object Use-After-Free Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Foxit PDF Reader. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.
The specific flaw exists within the handling of Doc objects. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-21867.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-05-03 15:30 – Updated: 2024-06-03 18:53In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
peci: cpu: Fix use-after-free in adev_release()
When auxiliary_device_add() returns an error, auxiliary_device_uninit() is called, which causes refcount for device to be decremented and .release callback will be triggered.
Because adev_release() re-calls auxiliary_device_uninit(), it will cause use-after-free: [ 1269.455172] WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 14267 at lib/refcount.c:28 refcount_warn_saturate+0x110/0x15 [ 1269.464007] refcount_t: underflow; use-after-free.

Mitigation
Strategy: Language Selection
Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.
Mitigation
Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction
When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.
No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
