CWE-416
AllowedUse After Free
Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable
The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.
9854 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

GHSA-RPW2-9H57-V827
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-02-27 21:32 – Updated: 2025-02-27 21:32In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
scsi: lpfc: Resolve NULL ptr dereference after an ELS LOGO is aborted
A use-after-free crash can occur after an ELS LOGO is aborted.
Specifically, a nodelist structure is freed and then ndlp->vport->cfg_log_verbose is dereferenced in lpfc_nlp_get() when the discovery state machine is mistakenly called a second time with NLP_EVT_DEVICE_RM argument.
Rework lpfc_cmpl_els_logo() to prevent the duplicate calls to release a nodelist structure.

GHSA-RQ67-55M3-CQX9
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-10-01 09:30 – Updated: 2025-12-12 21:31In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
accel/ivpu: Prevent recovery work from being queued during device removal
Use disable_work_sync() instead of cancel_work_sync() in ivpu_dev_fini() to ensure that no new recovery work items can be queued after device removal has started. Previously, recovery work could be scheduled even after canceling existing work, potentially leading to use-after-free bugs if recovery accessed freed resources.
Rename ivpu_pm_cancel_recovery() to ivpu_pm_disable_recovery() to better reflect its new behavior.

Mitigation
Strategy: Language Selection
Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.
Mitigation
Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction
When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.
No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
