CWE-416
AllowedUse After Free
Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable
The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.
9821 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

GHSA-W28C-HQG3-44GM
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-01-15 15:31 – Updated: 2025-11-03 21:32In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
btrfs: flush delalloc workers queue before stopping cleaner kthread during unmount
During the unmount path, at close_ctree(), we first stop the cleaner kthread, using kthread_stop() which frees the associated task_struct, and then stop and destroy all the work queues. However after we stopped the cleaner we may still have a worker from the delalloc_workers queue running inode.c:submit_compressed_extents(), which calls btrfs_add_delayed_iput(), which in turn tries to wake up the cleaner kthread - which was already destroyed before, resulting in a use-after-free on the task_struct.
Syzbot reported this with the following stack traces:

GHSA-W2HJ-8F47-3GW5
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-03-03 00:30 – Updated: 2025-11-03 21:31In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
wifi: mac80211: fix potential key use-after-free
When ieee80211_key_link() is called by ieee80211_gtk_rekey_add() but returns 0 due to KRACK protection (identical key reinstall), ieee80211_gtk_rekey_add() will still return a pointer into the key, in a potential use-after-free. This normally doesn't happen since it's only called by iwlwifi in case of WoWLAN rekey offload which has its own KRACK protection, but still better to fix, do that by returning an error code and converting that to success on the cfg80211 boundary only, leaving the error for bad callers of ieee80211_gtk_rekey_add().

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2023-08-10 15:30 – Updated: 2024-04-04 06:47Adobe Acrobat Reader versions 23.003.20244 (and earlier) and 20.005.30467 (and earlier) are affected by a Use After Free vulnerability that could lead to disclosure of sensitive memory. An attacker could leverage this vulnerability to bypass mitigations such as ASLR. Exploitation of this issue requires user interaction in that a victim must open a malicious file.

GHSA-W2RF-R2GQ-HXP9
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-01-11 15:30 – Updated: 2025-02-11 18:31In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
block: avoid to reuse hctx not removed from cpuhp callback list
If the 'hctx' isn't removed from cpuhp callback list, we can't reuse it, otherwise use-after-free may be triggered.

Mitigation
Strategy: Language Selection
Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.
Mitigation
Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction
When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.
No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
