Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-07-22 15:31 – Updated: 2026-07-22 15:31

Details

With NLnet Labs Unbound up to and including version 1.25.1, applications using libunbound and configured with 'unwanted-reply-threshold', could eventually be abruptly terminated if the threshold is reached and libunbound needs to call 'libworker_alloc_cleanup' since the function is absent from the function call allow list. When an application using libunbound sets 'unwanted-reply-threshold' to any non-zero value and the iterator queries an authoritative that replies with enough wrong-transaction-ID UDP datagrams to cross the threshold, the 'libworker_alloc_cleanup' will eventually be called. Since the function is absent from the function call allow list, this leads to a fatal exit of libunbound and eventual termination of the embedding application.Unbound itself is not affected since its relevant function 'worker_alloc_cleanup' is registed in the allow list and proceeds to perform the documented cache flush.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-04-10 00:30 – Updated: 2026-04-10 00:30
VLAI
Details

An Improper Check for Unusual or Exceptional Conditions vulnerability in the packet forwarding engine (pfe) of Juniper Networks Junos OS on MX Series allows an unauthenticated, network-based attacker to bypass the configured firewall filter and access the control-plane of the device.

On MX platforms with

MPC10, MPC11, LC4800 or LC9600

line cards, and MX304, firewall filters applied on a loopback interface lo0.n (where n is a non-0 number) don't get executed when lo0.n is in the global VRF / default routing-instance.

An affected configuration would be:

user@host# show configuration interfaces lo0 | display set set interfaces lo0 unit 1 family inet filter input

where a firewall filter is applied to a non-0 loopback interface, but that loopback interface is not referred to in any routing-instance (RI) configuration, which implies that it's used in the default RI.

The issue can be observed with the CLI command:

user@device> show firewall counter filter

not showing any matches.

This issue affects Junos OS on MX Series:

  • all versions before 23.2R2-S6,
  • 23.4 versions before 23.4R2-S7,
  • 24.2 versions before 24.2R2,
  • 24.4 versions before 24.4R2.

GHSA-3Q3X-839R-4XRH

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-07-30 09:32 – Updated: 2025-11-04 00:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net: dsa: mv88e6xxx: Correct check for empty list

Since commit a3c53be55c95 ("net: dsa: mv88e6xxx: Support multiple MDIO busses") mv88e6xxx_default_mdio_bus() has checked that the return value of list_first_entry() is non-NULL.

This appears to be intended to guard against the list chip->mdios being empty. However, it is not the correct check as the implementation of list_first_entry is not designed to return NULL for empty lists.

Instead, use list_first_entry_or_null() which does return NULL if the list is empty.

Flagged by Smatch. Compile tested only.

Summary
CHECK-fail in tf.raw_ops.EncodePng
Details

Impact

An attacker can trigger a CHECK fail in PNG encoding by providing an empty input tensor as the pixel data:

import tensorflow as tf

image = tf.zeros([0, 0, 3])
image = tf.cast(image, dtype=tf.uint8)
tf.raw_ops.EncodePng(image=image)

This is because the implementation only validates that the total number of pixels in the image does not overflow. Thus, an attacker can send an empty matrix for encoding. However, if the tensor is empty, then the associated buffer is nullptr. Hence, when calling png::WriteImageToBuffer, the first argument (i.e., image.flat<T>().data()) is NULL. This then triggers the CHECK_NOTNULL in the first line of png::WriteImageToBuffer.

template <typename T>
bool WriteImageToBuffer(
    const void* image, int width, int height, int row_bytes, int num_channels,
    int channel_bits, int compression, T* png_string,
    const std::vector<std::pair<std::string, std::string> >* metadata) {
  CHECK_NOTNULL(image);
  ...
}

Since image is null, this results in abort being called after printing the stacktrace. Effectively, this allows an attacker to mount a denial of service attack.

Patches

We have patched the issue in GitHub commit 26eb323554ffccd173e8a79a8c05c15b685ae4d1.

The fix will be included in TensorFlow 2.5.0. We will also cherrypick this commit on TensorFlow 2.4.2, TensorFlow 2.3.3, TensorFlow 2.2.3 and TensorFlow 2.1.4, as these are also affected and still in supported range.

  "details": "### Impact\nAn attacker can trigger a `CHECK` fail in PNG encoding by providing an empty input tensor as the pixel data:\n\n```python\nimport tensorflow as tf\n\nimage = tf.zeros([0, 0, 3])\nimage = tf.cast(image, dtype=tf.uint8) \ntf.raw_ops.EncodePng(image=image) \n```\n\nThis is because the [implementation](https://github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow/blob/e312e0791ce486a80c9d23110841525c6f7c3289/tensorflow/core/kernels/image/encode_png_op.cc#L57-L60) only validates that the total number of pixels in the image does not overflow. Thus, an attacker can send an empty matrix for encoding. However, if the tensor is empty, then the associated buffer is `nullptr`. Hence, when [calling `png::WriteImageToBuffer`](https://github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow/blob/e312e0791ce486a80c9d23110841525c6f7c3289/tensorflow/core/kernels/image/encode_png_op.cc#L79-L93), the first argument (i.e., `image.flat\u003cT\u003e().data()`) is `NULL`. This then triggers the `CHECK_NOTNULL` in the [first line of `png::WriteImageToBuffer`](https://github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow/blob/e312e0791ce486a80c9d23110841525c6f7c3289/tensorflow/core/lib/png/png_io.cc#L345-L349).\n\n```cc\ntemplate \u003ctypename T\u003e\nbool WriteImageToBuffer(\n const void* image, int width, int height, int row_bytes, int num_channels,\n int channel_bits, int compression, T* png_string,\n const std::vector\u003cstd::pair\u003cstd::string, std::string\u003e \u003e* metadata) {\n CHECK_NOTNULL(image);\n ...\n}\n```\n\nSince `image` is null, this results in `abort` being called after printing the stacktrace. Effectively, this allows an attacker to mount a denial of service attack.\n\n### Patches\nWe have patched the issue in GitHub commit [26eb323554ffccd173e8a79a8c05c15b685ae4d1](https://github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow/commit/26eb323554ffccd173e8a79a8c05c15b685ae4d1).\n\nThe fix will be included in TensorFlow 2.5.0. We will also cherrypick this commit on TensorFlow 2.4.2, TensorFlow 2.3.3, TensorFlow 2.2.3 and TensorFlow 2.1.4, as these are also affected and still in supported range.\n\n### For more information\nPlease consult [our security guide](https://github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow/blob/master/SECURITY.md) for more information regarding the security model and how to contact us with issues and questions.\n\n### Attribution\nThis vulnerability has been reported by Yakun Zhang and Ying Wang of Baidu X-Team.",

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2022-05-24 16:45 – Updated: 2024-04-04 00:41
VLAI
Details

A vulnerability in the Border Gateway Patrol (BGP) Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)-based Ethernet VPN (EVPN) implementation of Cisco IOS XR Software could allow an unauthenticated, adjacent attacker to trigger a denial of service (DoS) condition on an affected device. The vulnerability is due to a logic error that occurs when the affected software processes specific EVPN routing information. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by injecting malicious traffic patterns into the targeted EVPN network. A successful exploit could result in a crash of the l2vpn_mgr process on Provider Edge (PE) device members of the same EVPN instance (EVI). On each of the affected devices, a crash could lead to system instability and the inability to process or forward traffic through the device, resulting in a DoS condition that would require manual intervention to restore normal operating conditions.

Mitigation MIT-3
Requirements

Strategy: Language Selection

  • Use a language that does not allow this weakness to occur or provides constructs that make this weakness easier to avoid.
  • Choose languages with features such as exception handling that force the programmer to anticipate unusual conditions that may generate exceptions. Custom exceptions may need to be developed to handle unusual business-logic conditions. Be careful not to pass sensitive exceptions back to the user (CWE-209, CWE-248).
Mitigation
Implementation

Check the results of all functions that return a value and verify that the value is expected.

Mitigation
Implementation

If using exception handling, catch and throw specific exceptions instead of overly-general exceptions (CWE-396, CWE-397). Catch and handle exceptions as locally as possible so that exceptions do not propagate too far up the call stack (CWE-705). Avoid unchecked or uncaught exceptions where feasible (CWE-248).

Mitigation MIT-39
Implementation
  • Ensure that error messages only contain minimal details that are useful to the intended audience and no one else. The messages need to strike the balance between being too cryptic (which can confuse users) or being too detailed (which may reveal more than intended). The messages should not reveal the methods that were used to determine the error. Attackers can use detailed information to refine or optimize their original attack, thereby increasing their chances of success.
  • If errors must be captured in some detail, record them in log messages, but consider what could occur if the log messages can be viewed by attackers. Highly sensitive information such as passwords should never be saved to log files.
  • Avoid inconsistent messaging that might accidentally tip off an attacker about internal state, such as whether a user account exists or not.
  • Exposing additional information to a potential attacker in the context of an exceptional condition can help the attacker determine what attack vectors are most likely to succeed beyond DoS.
Mitigation MIT-5
Implementation

Strategy: Input Validation

  • Assume all input is malicious. Use an "accept known good" input validation strategy, i.e., use a list of acceptable inputs that strictly conform to specifications. Reject any input that does not strictly conform to specifications, or transform it into something that does.
  • When performing input validation, consider all potentially relevant properties, including length, type of input, the full range of acceptable values, missing or extra inputs, syntax, consistency across related fields, and conformance to business rules. As an example of business rule logic, "boat" may be syntactically valid because it only contains alphanumeric characters, but it is not valid if the input is only expected to contain colors such as "red" or "blue."
  • Do not rely exclusively on looking for malicious or malformed inputs. This is likely to miss at least one undesirable input, especially if the code's environment changes. This can give attackers enough room to bypass the intended validation. However, denylists can be useful for detecting potential attacks or determining which inputs are so malformed that they should be rejected outright.
Mitigation MIT-38
Architecture and Design Implementation

If the program must fail, ensure that it fails gracefully (fails closed). There may be a temptation to simply let the program fail poorly in cases such as low memory conditions, but an attacker may be able to assert control before the software has fully exited. Alternately, an uncontrolled failure could cause cascading problems with other downstream components; for example, the program could send a signal to a downstream process so the process immediately knows that a problem has occurred and has a better chance of recovery.

Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Use system limits, which should help to prevent resource exhaustion. However, the product should still handle low resource conditions since they may still occur.
