Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-401

Allowed

Missing Release of Memory after Effective Lifetime

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Draft

The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, making the memory unavailable for reallocation and reuse.

2010 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

drm/amdkfd: fix a potential ttm->sg memory leak

Memory is allocated for ttm->sg by kmalloc in kfd_mem_dmamap_userptr, but isn't freed by kfree in kfd_mem_dmaunmap_userptr. Free it!

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-03-25 12:30 – Updated: 2026-04-02 15:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

drm/xe/queue: Call fini on exec queue creation fail

Every call to queue init should have a corresponding fini call. Skipping this would mean skipping removal of the queue from GuC list (which is part of guc_id allocation). A damaged queue stored in exec_queue_lookup list would lead to invalid memory reference, sooner or later.

Call fini to free guc_id. This must be done before any internal LRCs are freed.

Since the finalization with this extra call became very similar to __xe_exec_queue_fini(), reuse that. To make this reuse possible, alter xe_lrc_put() so it can survive NULL parameters, like other similar functions.

v2: Reuse _xe_exec_queue_fini(). Make xe_lrc_put() aware of NULLs.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

wifi: rtw88: Use devm_kmemdup() in rtw_set_supported_band()

Simplify the code by using device managed memory allocations.

This also fixes a memory leak in rtw_register_hw(). The supported bands were not freed in the error path.

Copied from commit 145df52a8671 ("wifi: rtw89: Convert rtw89_core_set_supported_band to use devm_*").

Summary
ImageMagick has memory leak in msl encoder
Details

Memory leak exists in coders/msl.c. In the WriteMSLImage function of the msl.c file, resources are allocated. But the function returns early without releasing these allocated resources.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2022-05-24 19:04 – Updated: 2022-08-06 00:00
VLAI
Details

Multiple vulnerabilities in the implementation of the Cisco Discovery Protocol and Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) for Cisco Video Surveillance 7000 Series IP Cameras could allow an unauthenticated, adjacent attacker to cause a memory leak, which could lead to a denial of service (DoS) condition on an affected device. These vulnerabilities are due to incorrect processing of certain Cisco Discovery Protocol and LLDP packets at ingress time. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending crafted Cisco Discovery Protocol or LLDP packets to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the affected device to continuously consume memory, which could cause the device to crash and reload, resulting in a DoS condition. Note: Cisco Discovery Protocol and LLDP are Layer 2 protocols. To exploit these vulnerabilities, an attacker must be in the same broadcast domain as the affected device (Layer 2 adjacent).

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-04-03 18:31 – Updated: 2026-04-27 15:30
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net: ti: icssg-prueth: Fix memory leak in XDP_DROP for non-zero-copy mode

Page recycling was removed from the XDP_DROP path in emac_run_xdp() to avoid conflicts with AF_XDP zero-copy mode, which uses xsk_buff_free() instead.

However, this causes a memory leak when running XDP programs that drop packets in non-zero-copy mode (standard page pool mode). The pages are never returned to the page pool, leading to OOM conditions.

Fix this by handling cleanup in the caller, emac_rx_packet(). When emac_run_xdp() returns ICSSG_XDP_CONSUMED for XDP_DROP, the caller now recycles the page back to the page pool. The zero-copy path, emac_rx_packet_zc() already handles cleanup correctly with xsk_buff_free().

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

drm/v3d: Fix potential memory leak in the performance extension

If fetching of userspace memory fails during the main loop, all drm sync objs looked up until that point will be leaked because of the missing drm_syncobj_put.

Fix it by exporting and using a common cleanup helper.

Mitigation MIT-41
Implementation

Strategy: Libraries or Frameworks

  • Choose a language or tool that provides automatic memory management, or makes manual memory management less error-prone.
  • For example, glibc in Linux provides protection against free of invalid pointers.
  • When using Xcode to target OS X or iOS, enable automatic reference counting (ARC) [REF-391].
  • To help correctly and consistently manage memory when programming in C++, consider using a smart pointer class such as std::auto_ptr (defined by ISO/IEC ISO/IEC 14882:2003), std::shared_ptr and std::unique_ptr (specified by an upcoming revision of the C++ standard, informally referred to as C++ 1x), or equivalent solutions such as Boost.
Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Use an abstraction library to abstract away risky APIs. Not a complete solution.

Mitigation
Architecture and Design Build and Compilation

Consider using the Boehm-Demers-Weiser garbage collector (bdwgc), which can help avoid leaks.

No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
