CWE-401
AllowedMissing Release of Memory after Effective Lifetime
Abstraction: Variant · Status: Draft
The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, making the memory unavailable for reallocation and reuse.
2148 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

GHSA-X7M4-FG9V-R3J5
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2022-05-24 19:08 – Updated: 2022-05-24 19:08Manage Engine Asset Explorer Agent 1.0.34 listens on port 9000 for incoming commands over HTTPS from Manage Engine Server. The HTTPS certificates are not verified which allows any arbitrary user on the network to send commands over port 9000. While these commands may not be executed (due to authtoken validation), the Asset Explorer agent will reach out to the manage engine server for an HTTP request. During this process, AEAgent.cpp allocates 0x66 bytes using "malloc". This memory is never free-ed in the program, causing a memory leak. Additionally, the instruction sent to aeagent (ie: NEWSCAN, DELTASCAN, etc) is converted to a unicode string, but is never freed. These memory leaks allow a remote attacker to exploit a Denial of Service scenario through repetitively sending these commands to an agent and eventually crashing it the agent due to an out-of-memory condition.

GHSA-X7Q7-3CR3-M2Q3
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2022-05-24 17:23 – Updated: 2022-05-24 17:23On Juniper Networks MX series, receipt of a stream of specific Layer 2 frames may cause a memory leak resulting in the packet forwarding engine (PFE) on the line card to crash and restart, causing traffic interruption. By continuously sending this stream of specific layer 2 frame, an attacker connected to the same broadcast domain can repeatedly crash the PFE, causing a prolonged Denial of Service (DoS). This issue affects Juniper Networks Junos OS on MX Series: 17.2 versions prior to 17.2R3-S4; 17.2X75 versions prior to 17.2X75-D105.19; 17.3 versions prior to 17.3R3-S7; 17.4 versions prior to 17.4R1-S3, 17.4R2; 18.1 versions prior to 18.1R2. This issue does not affect Juniper Networks Junos OS releases prior to 17.2R1.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2022-11-01 19:00 – Updated: 2022-11-03 19:00Xenstore: Guests can create arbitrary number of nodes via transactions T[his CNA information record relates to multiple CVEs; the text explains which aspects/vulnerabilities correspond to which CVE.] In case a node has been created in a transaction and it is later deleted in the same transaction, the transaction will be terminated with an error. As this error is encountered only when handling the deleted node at transaction finalization, the transaction will have been performed partially and without updating the accounting information. This will enable a malicious guest to create arbitrary number of nodes.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-05-21 15:31 – Updated: 2025-09-23 21:30In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
i2c: acpi: fix resource leak in reconfiguration device addition
acpi_i2c_find_adapter_by_handle() calls bus_find_device() which takes a reference on the adapter which is never released which will result in a reference count leak and render the adapter unremovable. Make sure to put the adapter after creating the client in the same manner that we do for OF.

Mitigation MIT-41
Strategy: Libraries or Frameworks
- Choose a language or tool that provides automatic memory management, or makes manual memory management less error-prone.
- For example, glibc in Linux provides protection against free of invalid pointers.
- When using Xcode to target OS X or iOS, enable automatic reference counting (ARC) [REF-391].
- To help correctly and consistently manage memory when programming in C++, consider using a smart pointer class such as std::auto_ptr (defined by ISO/IEC ISO/IEC 14882:2003), std::shared_ptr and std::unique_ptr (specified by an upcoming revision of the C++ standard, informally referred to as C++ 1x), or equivalent solutions such as Boost.
Mitigation
Use an abstraction library to abstract away risky APIs. Not a complete solution.
Mitigation
Consider using the Boehm-Demers-Weiser garbage collector (bdwgc), which can help avoid leaks.
No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
