Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-416

Allowed

Use After Free

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable

The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

9811 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Details

An exploitable use-after-free vulnerability exists in the JavaScript engine of Foxit PDF Reader, version 9.7.0.29435. A specially crafted PDF document can trigger a previously freed object in memory to be reused, resulting in arbitrary code execution. An attacker needs to trick the user to open the malicious file to trigger this vulnerability. If the browser plugin extension is enabled, visiting a malicious site can also trigger the vulnerability.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

nfsd: fix management of listener transports

Currently, when no active threads are running, a root user using nfsdctl command can try to remove a particular listener from the list of previously added ones, then start the server by increasing the number of threads, it leads to the following problem:

nfsd_nl_listener_set_doit() would manipulate the list of transports of server's sv_permsocks and close the specified listener but the other list of transports (server's sp_xprts list) would not be changed leading to the problem above.

Instead, determined if the nfsdctl is trying to remove a listener, in which case, delete all the existing listener transports and re-create all-but-the-removed ones.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-03-04 18:33 – Updated: 2025-03-04 18:33
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

scsi: libfc: Fix use after free in fc_exch_abts_resp()

fc_exch_release(ep) will decrease the ep's reference count. When the reference count reaches zero, it is freed. But ep is still used in the following code, which will lead to a use after free.

Return after the fc_exch_release() call to avoid use after free.

Details

In Wireshark 2.6.0, 2.4.0 to 2.4.6, and 2.2.0 to 2.2.14, the Q.931 dissector could crash. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-q931.c by avoiding a use-after-free after a malformed packet prevented certain cleanup.

Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Language Selection

Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.

Mitigation
Implementation

Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction

When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.

No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
