Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-435

Weakness Discouraged

Improper Interaction Between Multiple Correctly-Behaving Entities

Abstraction: Pillar · Status: Draft

An interaction error occurs when two entities have correct behavior when running independently of each other, but when they are integrated as components in a larger system or process, they introduce incorrect behaviors that may cause resultant weaknesses.

When a system or process combines multiple independent components, this often produces new, emergent behaviors at the system level. However, if the interactions between these components are not fully accounted for, some of the emergent behaviors can be incorrect or even insecure.

Mapping guidance

This CWE entry is extremely high-level, a Pillar. However, sometimes this weakness is forced to be used due to the lack of in-depth weakness research. See Research Gaps.

Where feasible, consider children or descendants of this entry instead.

Research Gap

Weaknesses related to this Pillar appear to be under-studied, especially with respect to classification schemes. Input from academic and other communities could help identify and resolve gaps or organizational difficulties within CWE.

Relationship

The "Interaction Error" term, in CWE and elsewhere, is only intended to describe products that behave according to specification. When one or more of the products do not comply with specifications, then it is more likely to be API Abuse (CWE-227) or an interpretation conflict (CWE-436). This distinction can be blurred in real world scenarios, especially when "de facto" standards do not comply with specifications, or when there are no standards but there is widespread adoption. As a result, it can be difficult to distinguish these weaknesses during mapping and classification.

Title
IBM Control Center external service interaction
Summary
IBM Control Center 6.2.1 through 6.3.1 is vulnerable to an external service interaction attack, caused by improper validation of user-supplied input. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to induce the application to perform server-side DNS lookups or HTTP requests to arbitrary domain names. By submitting suitable payloads, an attacker can cause the application server to attack other systems that it can interact with.

Title
Cisco IOS and IOS XE Software TrustSec CLI Parser Denial of Service Vulnerability
Summary
A vulnerability in the TrustSec CLI parser of Cisco IOS and Cisco IOS XE Software could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to cause an affected device to reload. This vulnerability is due to an improper interaction between the web UI and the CLI parser. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by requesting a particular CLI command to be run through the web UI. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the device to reload, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition.

Vulnerability from cvelistv5 – Published: 2020-03-30 19:30 – Updated: 2024-08-04 08:22

Title
Prevent cache poisoning via a Response Content-Type header
Summary
In Symfony before versions 4.4.7 and 5.0.7, when a `Response` does not contain a `Content-Type` header, affected versions of Symfony can fallback to the format defined in the `Accept` header of the request, leading to a possible mismatch between the response's content and `Content-Type` header. When the response is cached, this can prevent the use of the website by other users. This has been patched in versions 4.4.7 and 5.0.7.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2022-05-24 19:15 – Updated: 2024-02-07 18:30
VLAI
Details

A vulnerability in the TrustSec CLI parser of Cisco IOS and Cisco IOS XE Software could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to cause an affected device to reload. This vulnerability is due to an improper interaction between the web UI and the CLI parser. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by requesting a particular CLI command to be run through the web UI. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the device to reload, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition.

Summary
Cross-Site Request Forgery in Jenkins
Details

An extension point in Jenkins allows selectively disabling cross-site request forgery (CSRF) protection for specific URLs.

Implementations of that extension point received a different representation of the URL path than the Stapler web framework uses to dispatch requests in Jenkins 2.227 and earlier, LTS 2.204.5 and earlier. This discrepancy allowed attackers to craft URLs that would bypass the CSRF protection of any target URL.

Jenkins now uses the same representation of the URL path to decide whether CSRF protection is needed for a given URL as the Stapler web framework uses.

In case of problems, administrators can disable this security fix by setting the system property hudson.security.csrf.CrumbFilter.UNPROCESSED_PATHINFO to true.

As an additional safeguard, semicolon (;) characters in the path part of a URL are now banned by default. Administrators can disable this protection by setting the system property jenkins.security.SuspiciousRequestFilter.allowSemicolonsInPath to true.

Summary
Prevent cache poisoning via a Response Content-Type header in Symfony
Details

Description

When a Response does not contain a Content-Type header, Symfony falls back to the format defined in the Accept header of the request, leading to a possible mismatch between the response's content and Content-Type header. When the response is cached, this can lead to a corrupted cache where the cached format is not the right one.

Resolution

Symfony does not use the Accept header anymore to guess the Content-Type.

The patch for this issue is available here for the 4.4 branch.

Credits

I would like to thank Xavier Lacot from JoliCode for reporting & Yonel Ceruto and Tobias Schultze for fixing the issue.

Summary
Request logging bypass in Jenkins Audit Trail Plugin
Details

Audit Trail Plugin logs requests whose URL path matches an admin-configured regular expression.

A discrepancy between the behavior of the plugin and the Stapler web framework in parsing URL paths allows attackers to craft URLs that would bypass request logging in Audit Trail Plugin 3.6 and earlier. This only applies to Jenkins 2.227 and earlier, LTS 2.204.5 and earlier, as the fix for SECURITY-1774 prohibits dispatch of affected requests.

Audit Trail Plugin 3.7 processes request URL paths the same way as the Stapler web framework.
