Memory Allocation with Excessive Size Value

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Draft

The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated.

Title
GNU libextractor before 1.15 Stack Overflow via OLE2
Summary
GNU libextractor before 1.15 contains a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the process_star_office function that sizes a variable-length stack array from attacker-controlled OLE2 stream data. Attackers can craft malicious StarOffice documents that allocate up to 4 MB on the stack, causing stack overflow and crashing any application extracting metadata from the document.

Title
Stack overflow in nscd due to unbounded alloca use
Summary
The nscd service in the GNU C Library 2.3.4 onwards may crash due to a stack overflow when a malicious DNS server returns too large a response for a DNS query, resulting in degraded DNS resolution for the system. Exploitation of this bug needs a system that has nscd enabled and using an untrusted DNS server for name resolution, with the compromised DNS server being capable of processing records large enough to result in a stack overflow in an nscd thread stack.  During experimentation, bind 9 was unable to handle large records, but that could change in future or with a different name server.  In typical installations, nscd is executed in an isolated context as its own user without a shell, due to which any compromise of that service is isolated. There is a remote possibility of nscd cache corruption if an attacker manages to get the stack pointer into a desired point in the heap, potentially resulting in other caches in nscd being overwritten with corrupt data through the stack overflow, until the buggy code path eventually results in a crash. Finally, a crash in nscd may result in performance degradation when resolving names, but it does not result in a denial of service.

Title
rclone: S3 multipart declared-length memory exhaustion
Summary
rclone is a command-line program to sync files and directories to and from different cloud storage providers. From 1.75.0 until 1.75.1, the serve S3 streamed multipart path in cmd/serve/s3/multipart.go passes attacker-controlled contentLength to multipart.NewRW().Reserve before reading request-body bytes. waitForTurn admits the current part and one oversized part when the buffer is empty despite --multipart-streaming-buffer-limit, and lib/pool allocates 1 MiB pages according to Content-Length or X-Amz-Decoded-Content-Length. A network client can retain or multiply these reservations without sending the declared body, exhausting process or host memory or permanently blocking request handlers. Anonymous S3 deployments require no credentials, while deployments using auth_key require an accepted S3 key. This issue is fixed in version 1.75.1.

This issue is fixed in version 1.75.1."

Title
KeePass 2.35 through 2.61.1 Memory Exhaustion via KDBX Header Field Size
Summary
KeePass versions 2.35 through 2.61.1 fail to validate KDBX header field sizes before memory allocation in the ReadHeaderField function. Attackers can craft a malicious KDBX file declaring excessive header field lengths to trigger allocation of gigabytes of memory, causing the application to consume resources and terminate.

Title
MOOS-IvP through 24.8.1 BHV_IPF Demultiplexer Memory Exhaustion via Packet Count
Summary
MOOS-IvP through 24.8.1 contains a denial of service vulnerability in the Demuxer::addMuxPacket() function that trusts the packet count declared in mux headers without validation. Attackers can declare arbitrarily large packet counts to trigger unbounded memory allocation, exhausting system resources and causing service unavailability.

Title
MOOS core-moos through 10.4.0 MOOSDB Denial of Service via Unbounded Packet Allocation
Summary
MOOS core-moos through 10.4.0 fails to validate packet length declarations in CMOOSCommPkt::OnBytesWritten(), allowing unauthenticated attackers to trigger unbounded buffer allocation by sending crafted wire packets. Attackers can send packets with large declared lengths to exhaust server memory and cause denial of service before client authentication completes.

CVE-2026-85201 (GCVE-0-2026-85201)

Vulnerability from cvelistv5 – Published: 2026-09-07 10:01 – Updated: 2026-09-08 15:06
VLAI
Summary
In Eclipse Ankaios versions 0.1.0 through 1.0.1, the agent does not limit the length declared by a workload in a length-delimited protobuf message received through the Control Interface FIFO. A workload granted Control Interface access can specify an excessive message length, causing an unbounded memory allocation that may abort the Ankaios agent process. This results in loss of orchestration services for workloads managed by the affected agent.

Mitigation
Implementation Architecture and Design

Perform adequate input validation against any value that influences the amount of memory that is allocated. Define an appropriate strategy for handling requests that exceed the limit, and consider supporting a configuration option so that the administrator can extend the amount of memory to be used if necessary.

Mitigation
Operation

Run your program using system-provided resource limits for memory. This might still cause the program to crash or exit, but the impact to the rest of the system will be minimized.
