Vulnerability from certfr_avis - Published: - Updated:
De multiples vulnérabilités ont été découvertes dans le noyau Linux de SUSE. Certaines d'entre elles permettent à un attaquant de provoquer une exécution de code arbitraire, un déni de service à distance et une atteinte à la confidentialité des données.
Solutions
Se référer au bulletin de sécurité de l'éditeur pour l'obtention des correctifs (cf. section Documentation).

There is no network or physical-access requirement for the reading attacker.
AC:L - On an affected platform a single read(2) of the sysfs file deterministically hits the type-confused dereference — no race, no memory-layout grooming, and no ASLR bypass is needed, and the read can be repeated at will since str_obj is cached at boot.
PR:L - The description attribute is created via DEVICE_ATTR_RO (mode 0444) under a world-traversable /sys/bus/acpi/devices/ tree, so any unprivileged local user can read it; no capability, user namespace, or root access is required.
UI:N - Exploitation consists solely of the attacker opening and reading a sysfs file; no victim action, mount, or configuration change is involved.
S:U - The invalid access and its consequences are entirely within the kernel's own security authority — there is no hypervisor, IOMMU, or other security-boundary crossing.
C:H - The type confusion feeds a firmware-supplied pointer and length into utf16s_to_utf8s(), whose output is copied straight to userspace — yielding an out-of-bounds heap read past the ACPI object (STRING case), disclosure of raw kernel pointers from the elements array (PACKAGE case), or a fully controlled arbitrary-address read (PROCESSOR/pblk_address on 64-bit, INTEGER on 32-bit), up to 4095 bytes per read and repeatable.
I:L - No write primitive exists — the output is correctly bounded to the sysfs page — but the confusion makes the kernel dereference a firmware-controlled address that is semantically an I/O address, so reads landing on direct-mapped MMIO can alter device state through read-side-effect registers, a limited and non-targeted modification.
A:H - The confused pointer is a NULL/low address in the POWER case and an arbitrary or out-of-bounds address in the others, so an unprivileged read reliably produces a kernel oops — a full panic on the panic_on_oops configurations common in embedded, automotive, and production deployments."

Title
aoe: fix the potential use-after-free problem in more places
Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
aoe: fix the potential use-after-free problem in more places
For fixing CVE-2023-6270, f98364e92662 ("aoe: fix the potential
use-after-free problem in aoecmd_cfg_pkts") makes tx() calling dev_put()
instead of doing in aoecmd_cfg_pkts(). It avoids that the tx() runs
into use-after-free.
Then Nicolai Stange found more places in aoe have potential use-after-free
problem with tx(). e.g. revalidate(), aoecmd_ata_rw(), resend(), probe()
and aoecmd_cfg_rsp(). Those functions also use aoenet_xmit() to push
packet to tx queue. So they should also use dev_hold() to increase the
refcnt of skb->dev.
On the other hand, moving dev_put() to tx() causes that the refcnt of
skb->dev be reduced to a negative value, because corresponding
dev_hold() are not called in revalidate(), aoecmd_ata_rw(), resend(),
probe(), and aoecmd_cfg_rsp(). This patch fixed this issue.
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

aoe: fix the potential use-after-free problem in more places

For fixing CVE-2023-6270, f98364e92662 ("aoe: fix the potential
use-after-free problem in aoecmd_cfg_pkts") makes tx() calling dev_put()
instead of doing in aoecmd_cfg_pkts(). It avoids that the tx() runs
into use-after-free.

Then Nicolai Stange found more places in aoe have potential use-after-free
problem with tx(). e.g. revalidate(), aoecmd_ata_rw(), resend(), probe()
and aoecmd_cfg_rsp(). Those functions also use aoenet_xmit() to push
packet to tx queue. So they should also use dev_hold() to increase the
refcnt of skb->dev.

AV:A - The strongest path is `aoenet_rcv()` → `aoecmd_cfg_rsp()` → `aoecmd_ata_id()`, driven purely by a received AoE frame; AoE is a raw EtherType-0x88A2 Layer-2 protocol with no IP encapsulation, so the attacker must be on the same Ethernet/LAN segment (SAN VLAN, cloud L2 network, shared switch).
AC:L - The refcount underflow is deterministic — one leaked `dev_put()` per transmitted packet with no race to win — and the attacker fully controls the trigger rate by injecting AoE config responses (and the retransmit timer keeps draining references autonomously afterwards).
PR:N - `aoecmd_cfg_rsp()` is invoked from the packet handler on unsolicited frames with zero authentication, and it auto-allocates an aoedev and target from attacker-supplied shelf/slot/MAC, so no credentials or local account are needed.
UI:N - The vulnerable code runs in softirq/packet-receive and timer context as soon as the frame arrives; no administrator or user action is required beyond the aoe driver being loaded.
S:U - The corrupted `struct net_device` and the resulting memory corruption are entirely within the kernel's own security authority, with no crossing of a VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary.
C:H - Premature free of a live `struct net_device` yields a use-after-free on a large, widely-referenced kernel object that can be reclaimed and re-sprayed by the attacker, giving an arbitrary kernel-memory read primitive and disclosure of adjacent slab contents.
I:H - The same UAF permits reallocating the freed `net_device` with attacker-controlled data, corrupting embedded function pointers (`net_device_ops`, `header_ops`) for a write/control-flow-hijack primitive leading to arbitrary kernel code execution.
A:H - Even without exploitation, the negative refcount trips `BUG_ON(netdev_refcnt_read(dev) != 1)` in `free_netdev()` and causes use-after-free dereferences of the freed device in the transmit path, producing a kernel oops/panic that is trivially reproducible by an unauthenticated LAN host."

The MITRE ATT&CK techniques below are AI-generated suggestions, inferred from the description of the
vulnerability by the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-classification-roberta-base
model, served locally by ML-Gateway.
They have not been verified by an analyst and are provided for guidance only.
The approach is described in our paper Mapping CVEs to MITRE ATT&CK Techniques: A Curated Gold-Set Classifier and the Limits of LLM-Assisted Label Expansion.
