Summary
Cisco BroadWorks Messaging Server XML External Entity Injection Vulnerability

Notes

Summary
A vulnerability in the web-based management interface of Cisco BroadWorks Messaging Server Software could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to access sensitive information or cause a partial denial of service (DoS) condition on an affected system. This vulnerability is due to improper handling of XML External Entity (XXE) entries when parsing certain XML files. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by uploading a crafted XML file that contains references to external entities. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to retrieve files from the local system, resulting in the disclosure of sensitive information, or cause the application to consume available resources, resulting in a partial DoS condition on an affected system. There are workarounds that address this vulnerability. This advisory is available at the following link: https://sec.cloudapps.cisco.com/security/center/content/CiscoSecurityAdvisory/cisco-sa-bwms-xxe-uSLrZgKs ["https://sec.cloudapps.cisco.com/security/center/content/CiscoSecurityAdvisory/cisco-sa-bwms-xxe-uSLrZgKs"]
Vulnerable Products
At the time of publication, this vulnerability affected Cisco BroadWorks Messaging Server Release 22.0. To check which version is currently deployed and which patches are currently activated, use the get versions all CLI command. For more information on how to check the patch level, see the Cisco BroadWorks Maintenance Guide ["https://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/broadworks/MandO/BW-MaintenanceGuide.pdf"]. See the Details section in the bug ID(s) at the top of this advisory for the most complete and current information.
Products Confirmed Not Vulnerable
Only products listed in the Vulnerable Products ["#vp"] section of this advisory are known to be affected by this vulnerability.
Workarounds
There is a workaround that addresses this vulnerability. Administrators can remove patch AP.ums.22.0.1123.ap371773 from the Unified Messaging Server until the corrective patch, AP.ums.22.0.1123.ap378900, can be deployed onto the server. Note: AP.ums.22.0.1123.ap371773 adds support for UTF-8 characters; that enhancement will be lost if the patch is removed. While this workaround has been deployed and was proven successful in a test environment, customers should determine the applicability and effectiveness in their own environment and under their own use conditions. Customers should be aware that any workaround or mitigation that is implemented may negatively impact the functionality or performance of their network based on intrinsic customer deployment scenarios and limitations. Customers should not deploy any workarounds or mitigations before first evaluating the applicability to their own environment and any impact to such environment.
Fixed Software
When considering software upgrades ["https://sec.cloudapps.cisco.com/security/center/resources/security_vulnerability_policy.html#fixes"], customers are advised to regularly consult the advisories for Cisco products, which are available from the Cisco Security Advisories page ["https://www.cisco.com/go/psirt"], to determine exposure and a complete upgrade solution. In all cases, customers should ensure that the devices to be upgraded contain sufficient memory and confirm that current hardware and software configurations will continue to be supported properly by the new release. If the information is not clear, customers are advised to contact the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) or their contracted maintenance providers. Fixed Releases At the time of publication, Cisco had not released updates that address this vulnerability for Cisco BroadWorks Messaging Server. However, a firmware patch is available. To download the firmware patch from the Software Center ["https://software.cisco.com/download/"] on Cisco.com, do the following: Click Browse all. Choose Unified Communications > Cloud Calling > BroadWorks > BroadWorks Messaging Server 22.0. Choose Application Patches > 22.0 > 22.0.2021-03. Select AP.ums.22.0.1123.ap378900. For information about fixed software releases, see the Details section in the bug ID(s) at the top of this advisory.
Vulnerability Policy
To learn about Cisco security vulnerability disclosure policies and publications, see the Security Vulnerability Policy ["https://sec.cloudapps.cisco.com/security/center/resources/security_vulnerability_policy.html"].
