RHSA-2004:583
Vulnerability from csaf_redhat - Published: 2004-12-20 17:57 - Updated: 2026-06-25 10:32rquotad in nfs-utils (rquota_server.c) before 1.0.6-r6 on 64-bit architectures does not properly perform an integer conversion, which leads to a stack-based buffer overflow and allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted NFS request.

statd in nfs-utils 1.257 and earlier does not ignore the SIGPIPE signal, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (server process crash) via a TCP connection that is prematurely terminated.

"text": "The nfs-utils package provides a daemon for the kernel NFS server and\nrelated tools, providing a much higher level of performance than the\ntraditional Linux NFS server used by most users.\n\nThis package also contains the showmount program. Showmount queries\nthe mount daemon on a remote host for information about the NFS\n(Network File System) server on the remote host.\n\nSGI reported that the statd daemon did not properly handle the SIGPIPE\nsignal. A misconfigured or malicious peer could cause statd to crash,\nleading to a denial of service. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures\nproject (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CAN-2004-1014 to this issue.\n\nArjan van de Ven discovered a buffer overflow in rquotad. On 64-bit\narchitectures, an improper integer conversion can lead to a buffer\noverflow. An attacker with access to an NFS share could send a specially\ncrafted request which could lead to the execution of arbitrary code. The\nCommon Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned\nthe name CAN-2004-0946 to this issue.\n\nAdditionally, this updated package addresses the following issues:\n\n- The UID of the nfsnobody account has been fixed for 32-bit and 64-bit\nmachines. Because the st_uid field of the stat structure is an unsigned\ninteger, an actual value of -2 cannot be used when creating the account, so\nthe decimal value of -2 is used. On a 32-bit machine, the decimal value of\n-2 is 65534 but on a 64-bit machine it is 4294967294. This errata enables\nthe nfs-utils post-install script to detect the target architecture, so an\nappropriate decimal value is used.\n\nAll users of nfs-utils should upgrade to this updated package, which\nresolves these issues.",

- Confirmed: The vulnerability has been validated from an analyst's perspective.
- Published Proof of Concept: A public proof of concept is available for this vulnerability.
- Exploited: The vulnerability was observed as exploited by the user who reported the sighting.
- Patched: The vulnerability was observed as successfully patched by the user who reported the sighting.
- Not exploited: The vulnerability was not observed as exploited by the user who reported the sighting.
- Not confirmed: The user expressed doubt about the validity of the vulnerability.
- Not patched: The vulnerability was not observed as successfully patched by the user who reported the sighting.

How durations are calculated
Following the VTEM framework (Black Hat USA 2015), time to patch starts when the vendor or a coordinator was informed, total time to patch at discovery, and disclosure to patch at public disclosure; vendor response time runs from the report to its acknowledgement. Time to exploit and time unpatched start at the earliest discovery or report, falling back to public disclosure. Unpatched time ends at the first recorded patch, or the calculation time when no patch is recorded. Exploitation to patch shows the interval between those two events; a published proof of concept is a public exploit, not exploitation.
Each result shows its source dates. A negative interval means the end event came first; when date-only inputs leave the order open, the result says so. Date-only inputs are approximate. The earliest evidence wins: KEV report dates and sightings are labelled as such. Records describing another vulnerability are listed but never calculated from, and a PoC alone does not establish exploitation. Missing patch evidence does not prove that no patch exists. Filters below change the event list only.

Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
