Vulnerability from csaf_redhat - Published: 2005-01-12 18:48 - Updated: 2025-11-21 17:28
Summary
Red Hat Security Advisory: nfs-utils security update
Severity
Important
Notes
Topic: An updated nfs-utils package that fixes various security issues is now available.
Details: The nfs-utils package provides a daemon for the kernel NFS server and related tools. SGI reported that the statd daemon did not properly handle the SIGPIPE signal. A misconfigured or malicious peer could cause statd to crash, leading to a denial of service. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CAN-2004-1014 to this issue. Arjan van de Ven discovered a buffer overflow in rquotad. On 64-bit architectures, an improper integer conversion can lead to a buffer overflow. An attacker with access to an NFS share could send a specially crafted request which could lead to the execution of arbitrary code. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CAN-2004-0946 to this issue. All users of nfs-utils should upgrade to this updated package, which resolves these issues.

rquotad in nfs-utils (rquota_server.c) before 1.0.6-r6 on 64-bit architectures does not properly perform an integer conversion, which leads to a stack-based buffer overflow and allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted NFS request.

Affected products
Product Identifier Version Remediation
Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (Advanced Server) version 2.1
Red Hat / Red Hat Enterprise Linux
cpe:/o:redhat:enterprise_linux:2.1::as
Vendor Fix fix
Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES version 2.1
Red Hat / Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Vendor Fix fix
Red Hat Linux Advanced Workstation 2.1
Red Hat / Red Hat Enterprise Linux
cpe:/o:redhat:enterprise_linux:2.1::aw
Vendor Fix fix

statd in nfs-utils 1.257 and earlier does not ignore the SIGPIPE signal, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (server process crash) via a TCP connection that is prematurely terminated.

Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
