RHSA-2006:0199
Vulnerability from csaf_redhat - Published: 2006-02-02 15:38 - Updated: 2006-02-02 00:00Mozilla Firefox 1.5, Netscape 8.0.4 and 7.2, and K-Meleon before 0.9.12 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption and delayed application startup) via a web site with a large title, which is recorded in history.dat but not processed efficiently during startup. NOTE: despite initial reports, the Mozilla vendor does not believe that this issue can be used to trigger a crash or buffer overflow in Firefox. Also, it has been independently reported that Netscape 8.1 does not have this issue.

The Javascript interpreter (jsinterp.c) in Mozilla and Firefox before 1.5.1 does not properly dereference objects, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code via unknown attack vectors related to garbage collection.
The XULDocument.persist function in Mozilla, Firefox before 1.5.0.1, and SeaMonkey before 1.0 does not validate the attribute name, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary Javascript by injecting RDF data into the user's localstore.rdf file.

"text": "Mozilla is an open source Web browser, advanced email and newsgroup client,\nIRC chat client, and HTML editor.\n\nIgor Bukanov discovered a bug in the way Mozilla\u0027s Javascript interpreter\ndereferences objects. If a user visits a malicious web page, Mozilla could\ncrash or execute arbitrary code as the user running Mozilla. The Common\nVulnerabilities and Exposures project assigned the name CVE-2006-0292 to\nthis issue.\n\nmoz_bug_r_a4 discovered a bug in Mozilla\u0027s XULDocument.persist() function.\nA malicious web page could inject arbitrary RDF data into a user\u0027s\nlocalstore.rdf file, which can cause Mozilla to execute arbitrary\njavascript when a user runs Mozilla. (CVE-2006-0296)\n\nA denial of service bug was found in the way Mozilla saves history\ninformation. If a user visits a web page with a very long title, it is\npossible Mozilla will crash or take a very long time the next time it is\nrun. (CVE-2005-4134)\n\nNote that the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 packages also fix a bug when\nusing XSLT to transform documents. Passing DOM Nodes as parameters to\nfunctions expecting an xsl:param could cause Mozilla to throw an exception.\n\nUsers of Mozilla are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which\ncontain backported patches to correct these issues.",

Nomenclature
- Seen: The vulnerability was mentioned, discussed, or observed by the user.
- Confirmed: The vulnerability has been validated from an analyst's perspective.
- Published Proof of Concept: A public proof of concept is available for this vulnerability.
- Exploited: The vulnerability was observed as exploited by the user who reported the sighting.
- Patched: The vulnerability was observed as successfully patched by the user who reported the sighting.
- Not exploited: The vulnerability was not observed as exploited by the user who reported the sighting.
- Not confirmed: The user expressed doubt about the validity of the vulnerability.
- Not patched: The vulnerability was not observed as successfully patched by the user who reported the sighting.

How durations are calculated
Following the VTEM framework (Black Hat USA 2015), time to patch starts when the vendor or a coordinator was informed, total time to patch at discovery, and disclosure to patch at public disclosure; vendor response time runs from the report to its acknowledgement. Time to exploit and time unpatched start at the earliest discovery or report, falling back to public disclosure. Unpatched time ends at the first recorded patch, or the calculation time when no patch is recorded. Exploitation to patch shows the interval between those two events; a published proof of concept is a public exploit, not exploitation.
Each result shows its source dates. A negative interval means the end event came first; when date-only inputs leave the order open, the result says so. Date-only inputs are approximate. The earliest evidence wins: KEV report dates and sightings are labelled as such. Records describing another vulnerability are listed but never calculated from, and a PoC alone does not establish exploitation. Missing patch evidence does not prove that no patch exists. Filters below change the event list only.
