RHSA-2012:1330
Vulnerability from csaf_redhat - Published: 2012-10-03 15:08 - Updated: 2026-08-04 22:06The W3C XML Encryption Standard, as used in the JBoss Web Services (JBossWS) component in JBoss Enterprise Portal Platform before 5.2.2 and other products, when using block ciphers in cipher-block chaining (CBC) mode, allows remote attackers to obtain plaintext data via a chosen-ciphertext attack on SOAP responses, aka "character encoding pattern attack."

"text": "JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform is the next-generation ESB and business\nprocess automation infrastructure. JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform allows IT\nto leverage existing (MoM and EAI), modern (SOA and BPM-Rules), and future\n(EDA and CEP) integration methodologies to dramatically improve business\nprocess execution speed and quality.\n\nAn attack technique was found against the W3C XML Encryption Standard when\nblock ciphers were used in cipher-block chaining (CBC) mode. A remote\nattacker could use this flaw to conduct chosen-ciphertext attacks, leading\nto the recovery of the entire plain text of a particular cryptogram by\nexamining the differences between SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol)\nresponses sent from JBoss Web Services. (CVE-2011-1096)\n\nRed Hat would like to thank Juraj Somorovsky of Ruhr-University Bochum\nfor reporting this issue.\n\nNote: Manual action is required to apply this update. The CVE-2011-1096\nissue is an attack on the WS-Security standard itself. Using new\nGalois/Counter Mode (GCM) based algorithms for WS-Security encryption is\nthe W3C suggested way of dealing with this issue. The WS-SecurityPolicy\nspecification has not yet been updated to include the new algorithms.\nConsequently, Apache CXF independently added support for such GCM based\nalgorithms through AlgorithmSuites called \"Basic128GCM\", \"Basic192GCM\", and\n\"Basic256GCM\" in the namespace\n\"http://cxf.apache.org/custom/security-policy\".\n\nTo apply these policies to your applications that use WS-Security\nencryption, specify them in the application\u0027s WSDL file. Refer to Red Hat\nBugzilla bug 681916 for an example.\n\nAll users of JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform 5.3.0 as provided from the Red\nHat Customer Portal are advised to install this update.",

How durations are calculated
Following the VTEM framework (Black Hat USA 2015), time to patch starts when the vendor or a coordinator was informed, total time to patch at discovery, and disclosure to patch at public disclosure; vendor response time runs from the report to its acknowledgement. Time to exploit and time unpatched start at the earliest discovery or report, falling back to public disclosure. Unpatched time ends at the first recorded patch, or the calculation time when no patch is recorded. Exploitation to patch shows the interval between those two events; a published proof of concept is a public exploit, not exploitation.
Each result shows its source dates. A negative interval means the end event came first; when date-only inputs leave the order open, the result says so. Date-only inputs are approximate. The earliest evidence wins: KEV report dates and sightings are labelled as such. Records describing another vulnerability are listed but never calculated from, and a PoC alone does not establish exploitation. Missing patch evidence does not prove that no patch exists. Filters below change the event list only.
