VAR-201203-0322
Vulnerability from variot - Updated: 2023-12-18 10:53Use-after-free vulnerability in Apple Safari 5.1.2, when a plug-in with a blocking function is installed, allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web page that is accessed during user interaction with the plug-in, leading to improper coordination between an API call and the plug-in unloading functionality, as demonstrated by the Adobe Flash and RealPlayer plug-ins. Apple Safari is prone to a remote code-execution vulnerability. Successful exploits may allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the user running the affected application. Failed attempts will likely result in denial-of-service conditions. Apple Safari 5.1.2 (7534.52.7) for Windows is vulnerable. Apple Apple Safari is a web browser developed by Apple (Apple), and is the default browser included with Mac OS X and iOS operating systems. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

DESCRIPTION: Krystian Kloskowski has discovered a vulnerability in Safari, which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user's system.
The vulnerability is caused due to plug-ins being unloaded when navigating to a new page while the user interacts with the plug-in (e.g. displays the context menu). If the plug-in has called a blocking function (e.g. TrackPopupMenu) before Safari navigates to another page, the API call may block until after Safari unloaded the plug-in, which can lead to the API call returning to freed memory.
The vulnerability is confirmed in version 5.1.2 (7534.52.7) on Windows using the RealPlayer and Adobe Flash plug-ins. Other versions may also be affected.
SOLUTION: No effective workaround is currently available.
