Summary
Cisco Firepower Threat Defense Software Local Malware Analysis Denial of Service Vulnerability
Notes
Summary
A vulnerability in the local malware analysis process of Cisco Firepower Threat Defense (FTD) Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on the affected device.
This vulnerability is due to insufficient error handling in the local malware analysis process of an affected device. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted file through the device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the local malware analysis process to crash, which could result in a DoS condition.
Notes:
Manual intervention may be required to recover from this situation.
Malware cloud lookup and dynamic analysis will not be impacted.
Cisco has released software updates that address this vulnerability. There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.

This advisory is part of the April 2022 release of the Cisco ASA, FTD, and FMC Security Advisory Bundled publication. For a complete list of the advisories and links to them, see Cisco Event Response: April 2022 Cisco ASA, FMC, and FTD Software Security Advisory Bundled Publication ["https://tvce.cisco.com/security/aims/PublicationPreview.aspx?ID=74836&Version=1&Revision=26"].
Vulnerable Products
At the time of publication, this vulnerability affected Cisco products if they were running a vulnerable release of Cisco FTD Software and had a Malware and File policy with Local Malware Analysis enabled.
For information about which Cisco software releases were vulnerable at the time of publication, see the Fixed Software ["#fs"] section of this advisory. See the Details section in the bug ID(s) at the top of this advisory for the most complete and current information.
Determine the Software Configuration
The Local Malware Analysis feature is enabled through Cisco Firepower Management Center (FMC) Software and cannot be enabled in the Cisco Firepower Device Manager (FDM) UI. This feature requires a Malware license.
To determine whether the Local Malware Analysis feature is enabled, navigate to the Cisco FMC Software UI and select Policies > File Policy > Rules. If any of the rules have Local Malware Analysis displayed in the Action column, the feature is enabled. For more information, see the FMC Configuration Guide ["https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/security/firepower/660/configuration/guide/fpmc-config-guide-v66/file_policies_and_advanced_malware_protection.html"].
Products Confirmed Not Vulnerable
Only products listed in the Vulnerable Products ["#vp"] section of this advisory are known to be affected by this vulnerability.
Cisco has confirmed that this vulnerability does not affect Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) Software or Cisco FMC Software.
Workarounds
There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.
Fixed Software
When considering software upgrades ["https://sec.cloudapps.cisco.com/security/center/resources/security_vulnerability_policy.html#fixes"], customers are advised to regularly consult the advisories for Cisco products, which are available from the Cisco Security Advisories page ["https://www.cisco.com/go/psirt"], to determine exposure and a complete upgrade solution.
In all cases, customers should ensure that the devices to be upgraded contain sufficient memory and confirm that current hardware and software configurations will continue to be supported properly by the new release. If the information is not clear, customers are advised to contact the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) or their contracted maintenance providers.
Fixed Releases
At the time of publication, the release information in the following table(s) was accurate. See the Details section in the bug ID(s) at the top of this advisory for the most complete and current information.
The left column lists Cisco software releases, and the right column indicates whether a release was affected by the vulnerability described in this advisory and which release included the fix for this vulnerability.
Cisco FTD Software Release First Fixed Release for This Vulnerability 6.2.2 and earlier1 Not vulnerable. 6.2.3 Not vulnerable. 6.3.01 Not vulnerable. 6.4.0 Not vulnerable. 6.5.01 Not vulnerable. 6.6.0 Not vulnerable. 6.7.0 Not vulnerable. 7.0.0 7.0.1 7.1.0 Not vulnerable.
1. Cisco FMC and FTD Software releases 6.2.2 and earlier, as well as releases 6.3.0 and 6.5.0, have reached end of software maintenance ["https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/eos-eol-listing.html"]. Customers are advised to migrate to a supported release that includes the fix for this vulnerability.
For instructions on upgrading your FTD device, see Cisco Firepower Management Center Upgrade Guide ["https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/security/firepower/upgrade/fpmc-upgrade-guide/getting_started.html"].
The Cisco Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) validates only the affected and fixed release information that is documented in this advisory.
