"value": "Open WebUI is an extensible, feature-rich, and user-friendly self-hosted AI platform. From 0.9.0 until 0.11.0, automation recurrence parsing in backend/open_webui/utils/automations.py anchored minutely and hourly rules at a fixed date of 2000-01-01 and then walked forward one interval at a time to find the next run. A single FREQ=MINUTELY rule enumerates roughly a quarter-century of occurrences synchronously on the event loop that also serves scheduler, HTTP, and WebSocket traffic, and the scheduler recomputes the next run for every claimed row on each poll. This causes availability impact for every other user of the instance. This issue is fixed in 0.11.0."

"value": "python-cryptography is a package designed to expose cryptographic primitives and recipes to Python developers. In versions 42.0.0 through 48.0.0, when resolving invalid certificate chains that include duplicate copies of self-signed certificates, the processing recursively invokes the same candidate, leading to an exponential blowup. Although the limitation that the chain depth cannot exceed a specified maximum depth prevents unbounded recursion and guarantees termination, an attacker-controlled certificate chain can lead the processing to easily take more than 5s to reject in testing. This amplification could form the basis for a resource exhaustion denial of service attack. The core issue arises in the recursive nature of build_chain_inner, which does not de-duplicate against previously analyzed candidates. As the correctness of validation is not affected, the integrity of a system cannot be compromised through this vector, only its availability. This issue is fixed in 49.0.0."

Prior to 10.27.2, the join filter in src/filters/array.ts computes complexity from array.length and separator length instead of the total string length produced by array.join(sep). The concat filter can cheaply double arrays of references, after which join materializes the referenced content while charging only for element count, allowing a template to exceed a configured memoryLimit by a large factor. The sibling array_to_sentence_string filter in src/filters/string.ts has the same accounting defect, and a crafted template can allocate toward V8\u0027s string or process memory limit and crash the process. This issue is fixed in version 10.27.2."

"value": "Http4s is a Scala interface for HTTP services. Prior to 0.23.35 and 1.0.0-M47, Ember HTTP/2 serializes outbound frames through one unbounded queue consumed by writeLoop. When the peer stops reading, an unauthenticated HTTP/2 client can continue sending PING, SETTINGS, or DATA frames that cause Ember to enqueue acknowledgments or WINDOW_UPDATE frames faster than the writer drains them, exhausting heap memory on a server built with withHttp2. The shared behavior also affects an ember-client connected to a hostile HTTP/2 server, and the patch replaces the unbounded path with bounded, backpressured outbound queues. This issue is fixed in versions 0.23.35 and 1.0.0-M47."

Prior to 0.23.35 and 1.0.0-M47, The shared WebSocket decoder permits unbounded message buffering because defragmentation accumulates fragments without a limit and FrameTranscoder accepts declared lengths up to Int.MaxValue. A remote client that completes a WebSocket handshake against an http4s-blaze-server or http4s-ember-server endpoint can exhaust server memory with oversized frames or fragmented messages. The patched decoder applies a configurable 64 MiB default limit to individual frames and defragmented messages through EmberServerBuilder.withMaxWebSocketMessageSize. "value": "Http4s is a Scala interface for HTTP services. Prior to 0.23.35 and 1.0.0-M47, Ember\u2019s HTTP/2 flow-control window is replenished according to bytes received from the network rather than bytes consumed by the application, while each stream stores DATA in an unbounded channel. A hostile peer can therefore send a body faster than a slow or non-draining application consumes it, retaining payloads in heap on an ember-server or ember-client configured with withHttp2. The patch bounds the per-stream H2Connection body channel so application consumption applies backpressure. This issue is fixed in versions 0.23.35 and 1.0.0-M47."

"value": "c-ares is an asynchronous resolver library. Prior to 1.34.7, ares_dns_parse() trusts the attacker-controlled ANCOUNT, NSCOUNT, and ARCOUNT fields before confirming that the DNS response contains enough bytes for the claimed records. Because process_answer() invokes parsing before transaction ID and question validation, a malicious DNS response can cause ares_dns_record_rr_prealloc() and ares_array_set_size() to reserve disproportionate heap memory for a tiny message. Repeated responses create large allocation and release cycles that can degrade or deny name resolution, without causing memory corruption or information disclosure. This issue is fixed in version 1.34.7."

Mitigation
Design throttling mechanisms into the system architecture. The best protection is to limit the amount of resources that an unauthorized user can cause to be expended. A strong authentication and access control model will help prevent such attacks from occurring in the first place. The login application should be protected against DoS attacks as much as possible. Limiting the database access, perhaps by caching result sets, can help minimize the resources expended. To further limit the potential for a DoS attack, consider tracking the rate of requests received from users and blocking requests that exceed a defined rate threshold.
Mitigation
- Mitigation of resource exhaustion attacks requires that the target system either:
- The first of these solutions is an issue in itself though, since it may allow attackers to prevent the use of the system by a particular valid user. If the attacker impersonates the valid user, they may be able to prevent the user from accessing the server in question.
- The second solution is simply difficult to effectively institute -- and even when properly done, it does not provide a full solution. It simply makes the attack require more resources on the part of the attacker.
- recognizes the attack and denies that user further access for a given amount of time, or
- uniformly throttles all requests in order to make it more difficult to consume resources more quickly than they can again be freed.
Mitigation
Ensure that protocols have specific limits of scale placed on them.
Mitigation
Ensure that all failures in resource allocation place the system into a safe posture.
CAPEC-147: XML Ping of the Death
An attacker initiates a resource depletion attack where a large number of small XML messages are delivered at a sufficiently rapid rate to cause a denial of service or crash of the target. Transactions such as repetitive SOAP transactions can deplete resources faster than a simple flooding attack because of the additional resources used by the SOAP protocol and the resources necessary to process SOAP messages. The transactions used are immaterial as long as they cause resource utilization on the target. In other words, this is a normal flooding attack augmented by using messages that will require extra processing on the target.
CAPEC-227: Sustained Client Engagement
An adversary attempts to deny legitimate users access to a resource by continually engaging a specific resource in an attempt to keep the resource tied up as long as possible. The adversary's primary goal is not to crash or flood the target, which would alert defenders; rather it is to repeatedly perform actions or abuse algorithmic flaws such that a given resource is tied up and not available to a legitimate user. By carefully crafting a requests that keep the resource engaged through what is seemingly benign requests, legitimate users are limited or completely denied access to the resource.
CAPEC-492: Regular Expression Exponential Blowup
An adversary may execute an attack on a program that uses a poor Regular Expression(Regex) implementation by choosing input that results in an extreme situation for the Regex. A typical extreme situation operates at exponential time compared to the input size. This is due to most implementations using a Nondeterministic Finite Automaton(NFA) state machine to be built by the Regex algorithm since NFA allows backtracking and thus more complex regular expressions.
